baby Q bump watch - week 28

ugh, late post this week guys. we flew to Florida for our friends' wedding on Friday, and I just happened to wake up with a sore throat that same day. I spent the weekend hacking up my lungs, and was diagnosed with bronchitis when we returned on Sunday. I spent two days in bed and am finally starting to feel better. I was so swamped with work yesterday that I didn't get a chance to post a bumpdate. but anyway... 

WOOHOO! hello 3rd trimester! 

along with the start of the final trimester, we began our birth classes this week. it's a 4 week course offered by our hospital and the class is one night a week for 2 hours. the first class was... a little scary, to be honest. I mean, obviously, I know I will be (hopefully) pushing a child out of my hoo-ha... but I guess I've been so happy and in pregnancy la-la land that reality hasn't really hit... until I saw what 10 centimeters looks like. and guys? it's big. I don't know why, but I am suddenly terrified of child birth. eeks. 

this was taken on Tuesday (28 weeks) when I was home sick... hence the no makeup, no bra, no pants.
also, hubs has a new (earlier) work schedule so I will be taking mirror photos from now on, unless I can remember to get him to take a picture when I get home from work.  

how far along? 

28 weeks... aka 7 months (!!!)... aka 3rd trimester. :)

how big is the baby? 

according to Baby Center, Ronin weighs about 2.25lbs and is 14.8 inches long from head to heel (the size of an eggplant). he can now blink his eyes and may even be able to see the light that filters in through the womb. he is developing billions of neurons in his brain and is accumulating more body fat in preparation for life outside the womb.  

total weight gain: 

I'm not certain, but I think I'm up about 10lbs now. I'll know tomorrow for sure. 

sleep: 

shitty, shitty, shitty. I cannot get comfortable to save my life. I've also been having lots of reflux lately, which makes laying down a pain. and Sean's snoring makes me want to stab something. 

best moment of the week: 

oh man, hard to choose! our 3D ultrasound was fucking amazing - it was SO cool to see his little chubby face in there. and despite my being sick, our trip to Florida was so nice - the Keane wedding was an absolute blast (see photo below) and the beach in Destin was heavenly.

 also, baby kicks never get old - it seems like he's getting stronger by the day and his movements have become more defined. some days he rocks my whole belly around and it looks crazy! I can definitely tell "where" he is by his movements. 

food cravings: 

anything cold. mostly popsicles.

food aversions: 

anything that causes heartburn/reflux.

symptoms: 

the pelvic pain is only getting worse and I'm finding myself to be really out of breath lately too, thanks to big boy pushing on my diaphragm. my feet have been swelling a bit and my nipples are still leaking (but not much at all).

gender sex: 

big BOY! :D 

most looking forward to: 

our glider arrives this weekend, and we'll be painting the room sometime in the next week. we finally chose a color (yesterday, actually), so now we just have to pick up a gallon and get to work. I'm excited to start putting furniture together and getting his room ready. :)

what I miss right now: 

sleeping on my stomach and being able to breathe. 

next appointment: 

tomorrow afternoon - regular check up and glucose test. fun!

baby Q bump watch - week 19

so we missed the bump update at 18 weeks... but for good reason, I promise. we spent 5 glorious days basking in the sun on the island of St. Thomas and celebrating Kaycie & Adam's wedding. even though I missed filling out the weekly questions, I did get a bump picture while we were at Cinnamon Bay in St. John last Friday. please excuse the wet hair and paleness... I was rockin' that SPF 50. :)

and now, we're back! I'm sad to be back to work today, but pretty excited at the same time, cause tomorrow is our anatomy scan! we'll find out whether baby Q is a boy or a girl finally! I cannot contain the overwhelming joy I feel at the thought of seeing my little bean in there. every ultrasound we've had to this point, baby Q has looked like something other than a baby... first a shrimp, and then a gummy bear. 

but tomorrow... baby will actually look like... a BABY. I can already feel a sob fest coming.

how far along? 

19 weeks, 1 day.

how big is the baby? 

baby Q is the size of a mango. she is weighing in at approximately 8.5 ounces and measuring about 6 inches long from head to butt. she is working hard at her five senses and is developing a protective coating on her skin, called the vernix caseosa.

total weight gain: 

I gained 3lbs from my last appointment, but I'm still down about 4lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight.

sleep: 

starting to get a little uncomfortable now that I'm not sleeping on my tummy. I'm also finding that I have a hard time staying in that deep REM sleep.

best moment of the week: 

the entire time we spent in St. Thomas was absolute paradise. however, I think this answer will be different next week since our big scan is tomorrow. 

food cravings: 

so many, and SO random. pickles, Italian ice, root beer floats, pickles, and crab chips. 

did I mention pickles? <--- same as last week. I want pickles constantly.

food aversions: 

nothing at all.

symptoms: 

the same old pelvic pain and constipation.

gender sex: 

we'll find out TOMORROW! I think we're having a girl, and Sean thinks we're having a boy. I can honestly see us having either, and I have no preference whatsoever.

most looking forward to: 

I think it's safe to say that our anatomy scan is the number one answer here. I just can't wait to know that the baby is healthy and as perfect as I want her to be. 

what I miss right now: 

while we were on vacation, I definitely missed alcohol, but only because everyone else got to enjoy fruity cocktails on the beach. I still had the pleasure of indulging in banana and strawberry smoothies though. :) 

next appointment:

I realized yesterday that I never uploaded pictures from our Myrtle Beach vacation... from August. it might have something to do with the fact that I only took about 130 pictures, and they were only taken on one day... the day we went to the Ripley's Aquarium.

I don't know why, but I was not in the picture taking mood while we were on vacation. I wanted to relax completely without worrying about documenting every single experience... even though visiting the aquarium was about the most exciting thing we did. the rest of the time was spent ocean or pool side, which was A-okay with me!

I'm a sucker for anything animal related, and although we didn't make our usual trip to Alligator Adventure, the aquarium was a pretty substantial substitution. 

if we make it back to Myrtle Beach next year, we will definitely be taking a repeat trip to Ripley's Aquarium. and I might try to swim with the sharks. we'll see how it plays out.

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me [book review]

confession: I have a major girl crush on Chelsea. the way to my heart is through my funny bone, and she gives me a major comedy boner. I've had the pleasure of seeing her stand-up live and it's just as amazing, if not better, than her books and her TV show. 

SUMMARY:

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me is a collection of embarrassing and prank filled stories by Chelsea's co-workers, friends, and family. unlike her previous books, this edition wasn't actually written by Chelsea herself, save a little excerpt at the end of each chapter in which she addresses the person who actually wrote it.  

"My tendency to make up stories and lie compulsively for the sake of my own amusement takes up a good portion of my day and provides me with a peace of mind not easily attainable in this economic climate."--Chelsea Handler, from Chapter 10 of Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang

the tales told mostly involve the various pranks that Chelsea loves to play on those that she loves... from tricking someone into thinking that someone filed a sexual harassment suit against them to convincing a friend to perform a "duet" with the bride at a wedding. Chelsea has the ability to create the most absurd lies and stories, and is able to keep them going for months on end, if only to make a complete fool out of those around her.

REVIEW:

as much as I love Ms. Handler, I am certainly glad that I'm not friends with her in real life. some of the tricks and jokes she plays on people are down right cruel, but they are still hilarious nonetheless. however, I am entirely too gullible and would fall for every single one. they are often so well thought out that everyone around is in on the trick, with the exception of the victim her/himself. some of the pranks are so outrageous and elaborate that it's somewhat hard to believe they really happened. but then you read Chelsea's "notes" to each person, and realize that she really does act like she doesn't give a shit about them, haha.

while the memories themselves had me laughing so hard I was -----><----- those close to peeing myself (as Chelsea often does, apparently), the writing could have used a little more work. it was pretty obvious that those involved in the book were not skilled or published authors. through parts of the book, I kind of felt like the people telling the stories were trying to be funnier than they really are, and I found myself really missing the voice of Chelsea herself, along with her dry and witty humor. I mean I guess Chelsea would surround herself with other funny people, but I felt like a lot of the humor was forced.

it's been made very clear that Chelsea Handler is an asshole with big boobs, who treats those she loves the most with the biggest asshole-ish pranks she can fathom. while this book strays from her norm, it did exactly what Chelsea sets out to do, and that is to entertain people. I found myself laughing and smiling like an idiot throughout the book, so it is deemed a success in my eyes.

Bear, the traveling kitty

whew! even though we were gone for a week, it felt like it went by SO fast! here's what's been going on lately in regards to BearFoFear...

we ended up having a bit of an emergency before we left. as you know, we took in little Skillet many weeks ago and have been fostering him ever since. well, he likes to play... and he likes to play rough. two weeks ago, he had scratched Bear's eye (which then swelled and got infected), leaving us no choice on a Sunday morning than to take him to the emergency room vet office. we got him on a medicine routine of eye drops and pain management, and THEN in the middle of the week, he had an ingrown claw of some sorts, which resulted in ANOTHER trip to the vet. 

Friday evening (aka the night before we were set to leave for Myrtle Beach), I got home and realized that Skillet evidently scratched his OTHER eye (which then swelled and got infected), which lead to yet another... you guessed it, trip to the ER. this time, his cornea was actually damaged just a tad. ugh.

needless to say, our vacation budget was steady dwindling down, and here I was driving my cat to the ER for the second time in a week's span a mere 10 hours before we were supposed to leave, and I hadn't even packed for vacation yet. the ER vet suggested a more vigorous medicine treatment which required an eye cream to be inserted 3 times a day. while our cat sitter is very oriented with kitties (she has three of her own), Bear, as I've mentioned before, is a very special cat. you really have to be super familiar with his personality and his mannerisms in order for him to allow you to put shit in his eyes. 

so instead of boarding him with strangers or leaving my poor sitter with the responsibility of taking care of a high maintenance kitty, we made the decision to take him with us. I was frightened at first, not knowing how he'd react to being in the car and carrier for 8 hours, but he did wonderful! he didn't make a peep through the entire ride, and he continued to eat and drink, which was a great sign. he did freak out a little bit at the condo, just because he wasn't used to his surroundings, but within a few days, he was back to his normal special self. I was so happy we were able to take care of him throughout the week... otherwise, I might not have enjoyed our vacation as much if I spent the entire time worrying about him. 

all in all, it was a great experience to be able to take our baby on vacation with us, and although it was a little stressful trying to keep him hidden while transporting him in and out of the condo, I'd do it again in a heartbeat to ensure that he had the proper care for his eyeballs. he seemed like he really liked the traveling, but he is definitely happy to be home on his couch!

oh, and we got a call Friday evening from our sitter informing us that Pheobe's eye looked a little swollen and red. yep, Skillet got her too. luckily, we've got PLENTY of medicine on hand to keep her comfortable until we can see our regular vet on Monday. that Skillet sure is a lot of trouble!

doesn't it seem like when it comes to animals, they all get sick or injured at once? sheesh, don't they know Mama's broke? ;)

I will be most likely taking next week off from blogging. it's time for our annual beach vacation and we're leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for the 8ish hour drive to South Carolina. I'm so relieved that tropical storm Emily is not threatening to rain on our parade - I am ready to enjoy the beach and truck my way through a few books, too.

so... I might post next week, I might not. it all depends on how much time I have and whether or not I feel like it, honestly. also, our anniversary is on Monday and I can't wait to celebrate with a spa day for the two of us - couples massages, facials (not the dirty kind, you freaks), and pedicures... we are both in dire need of some pampering!

I am 86% of the way through The Book Thief and it is getting SO GOOD. I wish I would have just kept reading it when I first picked it up back in March. it took a little while to get into (as is the case with most books), but now I can't seem to put it down! will review once I finish!

I'm trucking through The Book Thief now. I'm finally adjusting to the weird narration and the story is picking up and getting pretty exciting. I can't wait to review it when I'm finished.

baby shower update: most of the decorations are made (banner, cupcake toppers - see below, favor tags, game sheets, clothespins a la YHL, and the signs for the onesie decorating table and the game instructions). I went to the grocery store last night and got most of the food, so I can start on the cookies and the marshmallow pops tonight.

thankfully, a bunch of folks have offered to help out, and I've graciously accepted. I've got someone making pasta salad & chocolate covered pretzels, another friend making meatballs, another making deviled eggs, and someone else getting drinks and ice. all of those things being done by others takes a HUGE weight off my shoulders! 

all in all, everything is working out perfectly, and I'm loving all the crafts I get to take part in! I can't wait to put it all together and give Kaley a great shower.

exercise update: pretty much non-existent, outside of house work and chasing kittens. been eating very healthy though - summer is great, because we have tons of local farmers who set up road-side stands in our area. we've been chowing down on lots of fresh produce!

kitty update: Skillet is the only kitten we have left, and I got a call yesterday from a woman who is interested in adopting him. she's coming to meet him on Friday. I'm excited to have my bedroom/sanity back, but I sure am going to miss that little guy. how could I not be a little sad to say goodbye? look at this face!

Buckwheat went to his forever home a few weeks ago, and luckily, his Mama lives literally right down the street from me. we plan on having kitty play dates in the future... I'm so happy I'll be able to watch Buckwheat grow up! one of the hardest parts of fostering kittens (besides all the hard work that goes into it, haha) is that you rarely get to see the kitties when they find their new homes.

we officially have less than 2 weeks until we leave for the beach for vacation. 

I'm almost certain that it will be the longest two weeks of my LIFE. I'm so ready to just lay on the beach for a week and relax.

I'm already planning my next tattoo idea. I really want to pay tribute to both sides of my family, my mom's and my dad's. every male on my mom's side of the family (grandfather, uncles, etc) has served in the military, most of them enlisting and serving in the US Coast Guard, so naturally, I'm leaning towards something to represent that. I'd also like something to portray the American Indian heritage on my dad's side. 

so I think I've got it - I'm going to get traditional style pin-up girls on the back of each of my calves - one will be a sailor girl, and one will be a Native American girl. I'll add some other things like an anchor and a dream catcher or something, but that's the main idea I have so far. I'm pretty stoked about it!

this cute elephant themed baby shower. Kaley's baby shower for little Rhys is officially in the works and I am loving the inspiration I'm finding out there... I plan on DIYing almost all of the paper and decor. I can't wait to put all my (with Kaley's collaboration/approval, of course, haha) ideas in place and throw an amazing party for an amazing friend!

I booked our anniversary vacation this week, and I cannot wait to be out of here and on a beach for a week. I found a place in Myrtle Beach for roughly $800 for the week... for an ocean front condo with a full kitchen and pool during peak season, that's an amazing price. I still have to wait another two and a half months (or 79 days), but who's counting?

also? I can't believe we've been married almost 2 years. INSANITY.

Reverb 10 - December 22nd

December 22: Travel 

How did you travel in 2010? How and/or where would you like to travel next year?

sheesh. we didn't do nearly enough traveling this year. we drove to Ocean City in August for our anniversary vacation, which is only a 3 hour drive from home. it was a great trip, don't get me wrong, but I usually like to make those OC trips on weekends, so I don't know if I really count it as "traveling" even though it was an amazing vacation for the both of us. 

I also made the 6 hour drive solo to Blacksburg, VA to visit my cousin in early October. it was so nice to get away for the weekend, but it also completely sucked ass to be in the car for 12 hours total by myself. next time, I'll definitely be dragging the hubs with me. 

ideally, I'd be traveling to Europe at some point next year, but since we haven't even begun to plan a trip of that magnitude, I highly doubt it will become a reality. we do hope to make a trip with our friends to spend a week in OBX, which is only a 4-5 hour drive. we tossed around the idea of going back to Boston in the spring too, so that'd be a great possibility for us in 2011. I love to travel and see new places, so hopefully we'll have more trips to take next year than we did in 2010!

the place I called home

as you all know, I made the trek to Blacksburg, VA last weekend for my family's annual apple butter making. most of all, I was excited to spend time with my cousin, Amanda, who I hadn't seen since my wedding, which was August of 2009. 

I spent every summer in Blacksburg, since I was a year old, visiting my grandmother, until she died when I was 13 years old. she lived on a gravel road in a small town with a few houses placed on the adjoining land... one being my cousins childhood home. 

during those summers, we spent every waking minute together. we'd buy walkie talkies every summer and stay up all night talking to each other. we made up a spy club... we had our own official "spy club member" notebooks and everything... hey, we had to make sure we reported all our findings, like who our great-grandmother was talking to on the phone as we hid silently in her attic. we'd call the radio stations to request songs, and get super excited to hear our voices on the radio live. we were so close growing up, and when I think back to the best times of my childhood, those memories always include Amanda and my summers in Virginia. 

I left Friday morning at around 11AM, and after a beautiful four and half hour drive, I arrived at her house in McCoy. I love driving down there, especially during this time of year. I literally drive through the mountains, to the point where my ears pop every couple miles. the trees in the hills look so beautiful with their changing colors of green, to yellow, to red.

fun fact: I am actually a McCoy family member, and we have a whole city named after us. 

we took it easy on Friday, mostly taking the whole day to catch up and love on her kiddos. when her husband, Shawn, got home from work, we took the kids out for some pizza, and then came home to relax. 

I think it's awesome that she also has a husband named Shawn (my real name is Amanda, but if you call me that, I will cut you). they got married in July of 2007 and their wedding was the first trip that my Sean and I took together as a couple. 

on Saturday, we woke up with the kids and got them ready for the day. we then made the short drive to eat lunch at Sonic (motherfucking YUM... we don't have a Sonic here where I live, so I make sure to get as many blue coconut slushies as I can if I'm in the vicinity of one), and then headed out to my great-aunt's house where the family was making apple butter.

they had already started making the apple butter on Friday, so all that was left to do was to churn it over heat for hours on end. luckily, I was too busy walking around taking pictures and playing with the kids to be bothered to help out at all. I loved having the opportunity to see my family, though. I haven't seen my great aunt and uncle since Amanda's wedding three years ago, and they're all I have left from my grandmother's family. 

the kids started to get a little grumpy and tired in the afternoon, so we left and took them home to relax. we met Amanda's parent's for dinner, which was delicious. we spent the evening at her house watching some TV and chit chatting. 

I was supposed to leave on Sunday, but I decided to stay another day to spend more time with my cousin. we had a lazy day, laying around the house and keeping the kids occupied. we walked up to Amanda's parent's house and visited them for a while, and then her grandmother's house. we I spent the rest of the day/night watching football.

sadly, I had to come back to reality (and work... since I do have a mortgage to pay), so I made the journey home on Monday. unfortunately, it took me 6 hours to get home, as I got stuck in traffic on Route 66. yes, it really does exist. I had a great time visiting the place that I spent every summer, and I miss my cousin and her family already.
